Playground Mulch

When kids are running, jumping, and climbing, the ground beneath the equipment matters as much as the equipment itself. Bulk mulch for playgrounds is one of the most widely recommended surfacing options for residential play areas, school grounds, parks, and HOA common spaces. Crystal Landscape Supplies carries it by the cubic yard, available for pickup at our Loveland yard or for delivery directly to your site.

Why Wood Mulch Works Well Under Play Equipment
Engineered rubber and poured surfaces have their place, but wood mulch remains a go-to choice for outdoor play areas for good reason. It's natural, cost-effective, and, when maintained at the right depth, provides a cushioned landing surface that reduces the impact of falls. It also drains well, so play areas dry out faster after rain compared with compacted or hard surfaces.

Other reasons it's a practical choice for play areas:

  • Absorbs impact to reduce injury risk from falls off equipment
  • Drains quickly, no standing puddles that keep kids off the equipment
  • Blends naturally into residential and park landscapes
  • Easy to replenish as it compacts or displaces over time
  • Significantly more affordable than rubber or poured surfaces per square foot

Recommended Depth for Play Area Safety

Depth is where playground surfacing either performs or falls short. For equipment up to 6 feet in height, the general industry recommendation is a minimum of 9 inches of uncompacted wood mulch. For taller equipment, that depth increases to 12 inches. This is meaningfully deeper than standard garden mulch applications; factor that into your material estimate before ordering.

Since mulch compacts and disperses with regular use, plan on periodic top-offs to keep the depth in the safe range. Use our calculate how much mulch you need tool to get an accurate cubic yardage estimate based on your play area's dimensions and target depth.

Maintenance and Longevity

Wood mulch in a high-traffic play area typically needs refreshing every one to two seasons. Over time, it decomposes in the soil (which is good for the soil below), disperses toward the edges of the play zone, and compacts in the highest-traffic spots beneath swings and at the bases of slides. Raking it back toward the center and adding a fresh top layer each season keeps both the appearance and the safety performance where they need to be.

Edging around the play area makes a meaningful difference in containing mulch. If you're sourcing edging materials as well, explore all landscape supply products to see what we carry alongside our mulch selection.
